Tartans come in hundreds of different designs, some clan, some district, and many more from organisations and societies, all slightly different but following a known threadcount, which is the actual formula of the number of lines and colours. This pattern can be scaled up or down and as long as the proportions remain the same then it is still the same tartan. The colours work slightly different though, the thread count might list blue, red, and green, but it is down to the weaver to choose which particular shade/hue, or tone ; this is where the different terms of Modern or Ancient originate. A modern palette would have strong blues and greens and a clean bright red, an Ancient palette would have softer blues and greens and a warm red.
