{"id":5,"date":"2017-05-10T10:21:32","date_gmt":"2017-05-10T10:21:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/paulhenrykilts.com\/wordpress\/?p=5"},"modified":"2021-12-01T14:14:55","modified_gmt":"2021-12-01T14:14:55","slug":"5","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/paulhenrykilts.com\/wordpress\/?p=5","title":{"rendered":"illustrated talks"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n<p>I was asked yesterday after I gave a talk at Kingston University,\u00a0if I had a website listing of the different talks I do, the answer was no, so this will hopefully \u00a0rectify the omission .<\/p>\n<p>I am happy to give talks to \u00a0groups in an informal setting, ranging from school rooms to church halls, from 20 to 50 adults.<\/p>\n<p>Each event takes the form of an talk with lots of examples and samples, and I encourage the audience to ask questions and examine the items throughout the 45 mins &#8211; 60 mins. Each talk can be tailored to different groups, perhaps by focusing on a particular interest.<\/p>\n<p>I only need a well light space and a couple of tables, I don&#8217;t normally have any need of computers or electrical equipment.<\/p>\n<p>I have currently 5 talks available<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>1 From fleece to pleats<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_70\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-70\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/paulhenrykilts.com\/wordpress\/?attachment_id=70\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-70\" src=\"http:\/\/paulhenrykilts.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/master-fleece-to-pleats3.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"425\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-70\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Fleece to pleats<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>An introduction to the word of wool, spinning, weaving,dyeing, tartan, and \u00a0kilt making.<br \/>I discuss the history of wool, demonstrate spinning, talk about the development of weaving and the history of tartan, finishing with a &#8220;show and tell&#8221; of how a kilt is made.<\/p>\n<p>This talk \u00a0is an excellent overview of wool and tartan, covering a lot of ground very quickly, but it has proved to be one of my most popular bookings<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>2 Natural Dyeing<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-15\" src=\"http:\/\/paulhenrykilts.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/MG_2757-001-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"385\" height=\"289\" srcset=\"http:\/\/paulhenrykilts.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/MG_2757-001-300x225.jpg 300w, http:\/\/paulhenrykilts.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/MG_2757-001.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 385px) 85vw, 385px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>An introduction to the world of natural dyeing, \u00a0from early mud dyeing of 5000 BC right through to the discovery of the first synthetic dye in 1856.<\/p>\n<p>With lots of samples of dyed wools, grouped by the history and development of colourants , and samples of many of the various dyestuffs and chemicals used,I discuss the history and manufacture of coloured textiles.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>3 Bookbinding<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>An introduction to the history of books, from the beginnings on papyrus, through mediaeval bindings to mass produced paperbacks, I show examples of all the major styles. Discussion and handling of samples is important to the talk and everyone has the chance to handle wood, leather, paper and linen thread.<br \/>I also show a range of contemporary art bindings using glass,knitted cloth, ceramics, carved wood, and silk as cover materials.<br \/>I also offer a selection of bookbinding workshops, from simple pamphlets to multi section collections. Using samples of the plant, fibre, and finished products, a few personal stories\u00a0 of teaching school children how to spin it, and\u00a0 some family memories of work in the mills . Lots of samples and demonstrations of preparation and spinning.
